The Panorama of the City of New York is the world’s largest architectural scale model. It’s the site of a conversation between New York City historians Michael Miscione and Kenneth T. Jackson, who will use the Panorama to illustrate the significance of two major NYC milestones: the Commissioner’s Plan of 1811, which created the grid, and the consolidation of Greater New York in 1898.
Alessandra Belloni presents a screening of Musical Journeys with the Black Madonna in Southern Italy, based on her best-selling book. The film follows a mystical journey of initiation, transformation, and empowerment through the musical traditions of the Mezzogiorno regions. Southern Italian folk music and dances follow the film, along with a Q&A.
Legal scholar Mehrsa Baradaran addresses widespread American dissatisfaction with government with a look back at the transformation wrought by neoliberalism since the late 1960s. Find her in conversation, drawing on her 2024 book, The Quiet Coup: Neoliberalism and the Looting of America.
Catch a conversation borne of disparate eras: the Roman occupation of Judea and China’s Cultural Revolution. Hear unlikely parallels from authors Elaine Pagels (Miracles and Wonder: The Historical Mystery of Jesus) and Lian Xi (Blood Letters: The Untold Story of Lin Zhao, A Martyr in Mao’s China). (Pagels also speaks Thursday night at The New York Society Library.)
